boozeinprettycups on the road – el Público

Exposure to new flavours and products is on the rise in Perth. Luckily, this means tequila has expanded beyond the realm of a shot glass sandwiched between a lemon wedge and a salty knuckle.

Enter el Público! A bar focused restaurant and the niño de amor (thanks, http://www.spanishdict.com) of Paul Aron (Greenhouse), Michael Forde (Cantina 663) and Alex Cuccovia. Heading up the bar team is a well known face, James Connolly (ex Defectors/Sentinel).

When James invited us in to share some drinks we were more than keen. True to the theme, all the drinks he made for us used tequila or mezcal, and a quick glance at the back bar was impressive. These guys have gone out of their way to source products previously unavailable to Perthites and even many Australians.

Lagerita: Espolon Blanco tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, Tecate
Served in a cut off Tecate beer can.

el Público mezcal serve: llegal Mezcal Reposado, chilli salt,
hibiscus & raspberry icy pole
Served in a clay pot reminiscent of those used to serve agave spirit in Oaxaca

Captain Fanta Pants: Calle 23 Blanco tequila, St Germain Elderflower liqueur, Bitterman’s hopped grapefruit bitters, lemon juice, Fanta
Served in a crown seal Fanta bottle with crushed ice.

Margarita: Herradura Silver tequila, Cointreau, agave nectar, lime juice, salt

Our bartender for the afternoon, James Connolly.

white lady

There are some drinks that suit almost any place or time. The White Lady is one of them. We used Gin Mare for this little weekend breakfast drink, so a rosemary sprig from the garden was a great complimentary garnish to lift the Mediterranean botanicals through the citrus. (Our lemon tree is going nuts again so expect to see a lot more of the sours family!)

gin mare, cointreau, lemon juice, rosemary sprig

crusta

This little cup is the perfect size for a little nip of something at home, and as we discovered, the diameter of the rim in the perfect size for the long, lemon zest garnish required for a crusta.

Cointreau, Luxardo Maraschino liqueur, Martell VS cognac, lemon juice, castor sugar

lime and lemon whiskey sour

Birthday cups from Andy Mac.
We put a whiskey sour in ’em. Lime and bourbon are surprisingly complimentary. It’s a spicier and drier sour than lemon.

Jim Beam Black Label, lemon juice, lime juice, castor sugar

mocktail – parsons special

it’s nice when a mocktail is a bit more than an $8 juice.

grenadine, lemon juice, orange juice, egg yolk, raw sugar, soda water.

boozeinprettycups on the road – Helvetica

Helvetica Bar is another venue that opened with the first wave of
Small Bar licence approvals.
They’ve recently been named an Ardbeg Embassy (link). A few collectors amongst the staff meant we had a lot of pretty cups to choose from.
(Special thanks to Jason Millhahn).

Once again, bartenders choice featuring current drink list items.

Howards Rusty Nail: Talisker 10 year old, Marie Brizard cacao blanc,
Limeburners whisky liqueur, served with salted fudge.

Ardbeg Lord of the Isles

Penicillin: Compass Box Asyla, lemon juice, homemade honey & ginger syrup,
Laphroaig 10 year old float, served with crystallised ginger.

Barrel Aged Bobby Burns: Famous Grouse, Dubbonet, Dom Benedictine,
Fee Orange Bitters, port barrel aged.

Our bartender for the afternoon, Javla Fitzgibbon.

boozeinprettycups on the road – Ezra Pound

Ezra Pound, well known for delivering the goods when it comes to classic cocktails, was part of the first wave of small bars in Perth 3 years ago.

Once again drinks selected were bartender’s choice. The Long Island Iced Tea is a current feature on their summer cocktail list. Ezra Pound serve many of their cocktails in recycled glass jars.

Blood and Sand: Dolin Rouge, Heering Danish Cherry Liqueur, Aberlour 10 year old single malt, fresh pressed orange juice

Long Island Iced Tea: 42 Below vodka, No.3 London Dry Gin, Havana Club Blanco, Herradura Reposado, Cointreau, lemon juice, coca cola served on the side

Tom Collins: Old Tom Gin, lemon juice, sugar, soda

gin & tonic: this is not the standard way a g&t is served at Ezra Pound…
we just wanted to make use of the glass.

Our bartender for the evening, Mitch Keane.

bourbon sour flipped

A project drink. The cinnamon sugar isn’t working out at the moment though. Nice little engraved coupe!

contains: Jim Beam Black Label, Massanez Creme de Peche, lemon juice, whole egg, raw sugar and hand ground cinnamon sugar

miscellaneous sour

Sometimes we take our personal liquor cabinet for granted.
This drink is a riff on about a hundred others. It has no name.
It was delicious but it was only enhanced by this seriously beautiful cup.

miscellaneous sour contains: lemon juice, lemon barley cordial, fee bros.
cherry bitters, orgeat, cadenheads old raj gin, green chartreuse. (D)

home made limoncello and genever sour

Bought some new cups today and couldn’t wait to make a drink. We have so many lemons at home now that sours are a necessary evil. Malty, spicy genever and home made tequila limoncello are beefed up by regan’s orange bitters and fresh lemon juice. (B)
